Are You Picking Up Your IT Toys?

Are You Picking Up Your IT Toys?

When we were kids, many of us heard the same reminder at the end of the day: “Pick up your toys.”

It was not just about keeping the room looking nice. It was about avoiding problems. A toy left in the middle of the floor could be stepped on, broken, lost, or become a painful surprise in the dark.

The same idea applies to technology.

In business, we use IT tools every day. We open systems, test settings, remote into computers, adjust firewall rules, install updates, create user accounts, spin up virtual machines, and troubleshoot problems. But after the work is done, the important question is:

Are we cleaning up after ourselves?

For example, maybe a firewall port gets opened temporarily for testing. That may be fine in the moment. But if that port is left open after the test is complete, it can become an unnecessary security risk. It is the digital version of leaving a door unlocked because you were only “checking something.”

Or maybe someone uses Remote Desktop to connect to a server or workstation and opens several windows, tools, documents, or admin consoles. Then they disconnect without saving, closing, or documenting anything. The next person who logs in is greeted by a messy screen and has no idea what was being worked on. Worse, unsaved changes or open admin tools can create confusion or risk.

The same goes for updates and patches. Those “pesky” Windows updates may feel inconvenient, but ignoring them is like letting laundry pile up in the corner. It may not seem urgent today, but eventually it becomes a bigger problem. Security patches, firmware updates, and software updates help protect systems from known vulnerabilities and keep business operations running smoothly.

There are plenty of other examples:

An old employee account that never gets disabled.
A test user account that still has admin rights.
A shared password saved in a browser.
A temporary file full of sensitive information left on a desktop.
An unused application still installed on a company computer.
An old backup job that no one has checked in months.
A virtual server created for testing that is still running and consuming resources.
A network device with default settings that was never fully configured.
A printer, camera system, or Wi-Fi access point installed quickly but never properly documented.

None of these things may seem like a major issue by themselves. But over time, they add up. The “IT bedroom” gets cluttered. Systems become harder to manage. Security gaps appear. Support takes longer. Costs increase. Small messes become larger risks.

Good IT management is not just about fixing problems when something breaks. It is also about maintaining clean, organized, secure systems before problems happen.

That means closing what should be closed, removing what should be removed, documenting what should be documented, updating what should be updated, and regularly reviewing the tools and systems your business depends on.

From managed IT support and cybersecurity to device management, networking, backups, Microsoft 365, VoIP, and security camera systems, we help small and midsize businesses bring order, security, and confidence back to their technology.
